Designer Tanja Kovacevic has always had a passion for jewellery but it wasn't until her stint as an accessory buyer, that she had the opportunity to genuinely define her personal aesthetic; understated, delicate and innately feminine.

THREE OVER ONE honest hardworking men's apparel

Sydney-based men’s fashion label Three Over One is inspired by the vintage man. The label draws influence from American sportswear from the World War Two era of the 1930-40’s, and by a British working man’s wardrobe. 2009 marks the labels first collection.

In an interview with Scott Schuman (founder of The Satorialist), Three Over One designer Jim Thompson states: “The collection has a rugged and relaxed elegance with an appreciation of the attitudes, style, quality and workmanship of the past “
”[Three Over One is about] getting back to what men need from their clothes — practicality and versatility”

Jim was born in London in 1973 and studied at the University of Manchester where he received a degree in The Management and Marketing of Textiles. He then pursued a successful career in the UK and Australia as a buyer for a variety of well known brands and retail chains, before setting up his own label Three Over One in 2008.

Three Over One is built around classic wardrobe staples and is influenced by vintage styling, fabrication and make. Jim designs collections that are driven by practical end use, for real people and real lives but always with a rugged elegance.

Three Over One is a collaborative effort of Jim Thompson and fellow Australian fashion designer Kinae Kim (known for women's clothing label Staple). The result is an old-school vintage look, with pleated Japanese denim, Italian check cotton shirting and dull shades. In a nutshell, Three Over One clothing is a practical men’s fashion label without compromise for quality – It is no one the label’s tagline reads
“Honest, Hardworking Mens Apparel”

Heavily inspired by the photography of Irvin Penn, particularly his 1951 series “Small Trades”, where he photographed a wide range of people in a stark studio environment wearing their everyday working attire, Australia’s Three Over One spring/summer 2011 collection continues with designer Jim Thompson celebration of the working man in a range of rugged yet elegant menswear. The collection consists of unstructured tailoring with cropped fitted jackets and pleated relaxed fitting pants. Denim jeans are in the best Japanese Selvedge qualities with authentic fits and styling. Shirts are in soft washed linens and cottons and knits are influenced by vintage under garments and early athletic wear.

Deb Sams and Mary Lou Ryan, two friends with an impressive history in Australian fashion, started Bassike together in 2006 with the aim of filling a specific gap in the market. Thursday 28 July, saw the the much anticipated Mr & Mrs Smith launch of Dinosaur Designs home wares & jewellery coinciding with the Spring Summer 2011/12 first arrivals from a favourite of ours, stunning Danish designer By Malene Birger.

We celebrated with a champagne morning tea along. A beautiful group of friends, our Manly mums & locals, and representatives from both of the labels in tow, it was a fabulous morning exploring the ranges, sipping on orange juice cocktails and spending up a storm.

The shop was styled and inspired by Dinosaur Designs current "INSECT" range and covered with leaves, lilies, orchids, roses & pretty little posies all put together by our very own, talented Christelle Scifo of "flowers by fleurette" check her beautiful blog here.

So it's official DINOSAUR DESIGNS is in store & available now - pop in quick as there are many one offs and amazing treasurable pieces waiting for a loving home!

Spent the morning viewing WILLOW's 2012 resort collection at their head office in Sydney. It was absolutely amazing as always! Drapy silk dresses, perfectly cut jackets, pleated skirts and wide leg pants. This collection is a beautiful mix of Coral, Sage, Orchid pink, Aruba light blue, Acid Green and Beaded gold.

'For her 2012 Resort collection, entitled 'Industrialisation Versus Artisan', Kit Willow looked to 20th century legendary French fashion designer Paul Poiret for inspiration. The collection is a fusion of traditional practices and modern technological techniques that results in an unstructured, glamourous anthology. Willow scores another coup in snagging British model and It-girl Poppy Delevigne as the face of the collection'

Fashion label Manning Cartell today showed off their 2011 spring/summer collection at RAFW. The collection which was showcased off site was strong, feminine and modern, receiving a grand applause. We spoke to the designers about what inspired them and how they prepared for this week.

What was the inspiration behind the labels name ‘Manning Cartell’?

Manning is our family name, Cartel’s meaning is an organisation or group, we added an L to balance, and together they form our label Manning Cartell.

What five words would you use to describe your label?

Modern, elegant, feminine, independent & strong.

As a business made up of three sisters, who does what?

Although we have our own projects we have a joint approach to both design and business.

How has the label evolved since your first collection in 2005?

Since our first collection we have enjoyed considerable growth, with retail stores in Sydney and Melbourne and a strong wholesale distribution throughout Myer and boutiques nationally as well as selected international stockists. We are continually evolving and refining our position in the Australian Fashion market.

How will this fashion week compare to your first ever fashion week in 2007?

This being our first off site show we have an amazing opportunity to further communicate the creative vision of our Summer 11.12 collection ‘Labyrinth Unlocked’.

What do you do to prepare for fashion week?

We try to be as well planned and organised as possible.

Do you think it is important for up and coming labels to show at fashion week?

Without doubt RAFW is an amazing opportunity to showcase your collection to the media, buyers and VIPs .

Why do you think Australian women love to wear your clothes?

I think they appreciate our quality and fit, we source innovative and luxurious fabrics and manufacture most of our collections in Australia .

How do you find inspiration for your collections?

Our inspirations are wide and varied; we are constantly inspired by our environment. We look to architecture, nature, music, art and history.

What’s next in stall for Manning Cartell?

We are building our team and readying ourselves for new opportunities, we have found things tend to unfold organically for us.

Based in Sydney, Australia, she has art directed her own art & fashion zine (Lilacmenace), collaborated with local fashion designers including Mala Brajkovic (branding & yardage prints) and Jessie Hill (jewellery & yardages), and provided illustrations and art direction to a number of international publications: Russh (website art direction), and Yen, Nylon, Dazed and Confused Japan (illustration).

We are proud to be supporting the the Power Living Community in Manly as it holds it's a fundraiser event this coming Saturday 28th May 2011. The event is raising money for a worthy cause and deserving charity; the Black Dog Institute for depression, bipolar and metal illness.

The Black Dog Institute (BDI) is an educational, research, clinical and community-oriented facility offering specialist expertise in mood disorders - a range of disorders that include depression and bipolar disorder. The Institute is attached to the Prince of Wales Hospital and affiliated with the University of New South Wales. Formally launched in February 2002, it builds on the work of its predecessor, the Mood Disorders Unit, established 17 years earlier as a state-wide clinical research facility. Black Dog Institutes mission is to advance the understanding, diagnosis and management of the mood disorders by continuously raising clinical, research, education and training standards. In so doing, the Institute aims to improve the lives of those affected - and in turn - the lives of their families and friends.

We all love a good party, and no one deserves it more than you guys!

This is the perfect opportunity to let your hair down, relax, socialise, and help give back to the community that we so love and are honoured to make up a part of.

However racing for Australia was just the warm up for the battle to save her husband Paul from a rare and nasty cancer, learning quickly about organic food. With her husband’s survival and their five children as inspiration for health, Nici has built an organic food business, working towards a goal of sharing clean, honest, organic food to people everywhere.

• Black Dog Ambassador and World Champion elite swimmer Brendan Capell. Brendan is a young man passionate about giving back, a legend in and out of the Ocean.

“I THINK our last show was misinterpreted as trying to be high fashion, which was never what we intended,” said Sienna Miller of last season’s Twenty8Twleve catwalk show. It was this that made the sisters want to try out a presentation format to showcase their autumn/winter 2010-11 collection.
The location, Two Temple Place, offered a welcoming and luxurious atmosphere with its intricately carved wooden rooms and rich tapestries. Guests were led into drawing room, where a film of Sienna in pieces from the collection was projected onto a wall and, later, up a vast staircase to a grand room where the models - perched on two stages - lounged on chaises longues and antique chairs, chatting to one another.
The duo’s inspiration was admittedly vast, citing glam-rock-meets-Adam-Ant, the Blitz Kids and peace protester Johanna Lawrenson as just a few of their points of reference. Models were young and fresh with mussed-up, centre-parted hair and the look was, in Savannah’s words, “multi-textural and multi-dimensional”.
Devoré velvet and jersey mini dresses were accompanied by chunky black leather platforms, courtesy of Camilla Skovgard, and ribbed tights. A grey jersey maxi was dressed down with a khaki parka and high-waisted slim tartan trousers looked cool with a black fur-lined drop-pocket coat.

Denim was acid-washed and skinny and chunky heart pendants by Pamela Love finished off almost every look giving the ever-present Sienna rock-chick vibe. Eclecticism was certainly the theme as velvet scarves, tied as turbans, and cosy wool cardigans that effused countryside chic sat side-by-side to create wearable looks that will appeal to many.
It’s clear that the Miller sisters are extremely aware that their brand is a commercial one, and as Savannah herself pointed out, with the likes of Christopher Kane around, they would be hard pushed to compete with high fashion names. But this a quality they strive to highlight. They create clothes that they would wear and, to be honest, who wouldn’t want a piece of the Sienna and Savannah magic?

For those of you who don’t know, Sienna Miller and her fashion designer sister, Savannah are behind label Twenty8Twelve. I have some issues with this label, first, you don’t name any kind of company after four numbers and then mix up the spelling with letters and numbers. Secondly, the new Fall 2010 line looks like something I can see on any street corner in the Mission, worn by a lady who paid a fraction of the price for a similar outfit. I understand that Sienna says she doesn’t claim to be a designer and feels she’s been misinterpreted, but when you own a clothing line with someone who has had formal training in fashion design, like her sister…I’m sorry, like it or not, you are a designer.

Back to the Fall 2010 collection, it’s not high-end, and the clothes, while doubtless fun for a certain kind of British girl to wear, don’t display the kind of skill that have won critical acclaim. In this collection, there were some neat pieces, such as the trippy colored giant cardigan, lovely black tops and dresses with fringed shoulders, and a red minidress.
